Abstract

Formaldehyde gas is a toxic gas and is an indoor pollutant. Phytoremediation is an effective method to remove indoor formaldehyde gas. This research aims to investigate the effect of temperature (20°C, 25°C, and 30°C) on the phytoremediation of formaldehyde by hydroponic and soil-grown Epipremnum aureum in both light and dark conditions. The experiments were conducted in a sealed acrylic box, which was tested to be airtight. Additional formaldehyde solution was added to the box to vaporize, and the concentrations of formaldehyde gas and carbon dioxide gas in the box were measured and recorded. The results showed that the formaldehyde absorption ability of both hydroponic and soil-grown Epipremnum aureum decreased as the temperature increased from 20°C to 30°C, with 20°C being the optimum temperature within the experiments. The results showed that cultivation methods (hydroponic and soil-grown) and light intensity (1100 lux and 0 lux) had no significant effect on the formaldehyde absorption capacity of Epipremnum aureum. Therefore, for greatest absorption, potted Epipremnum aureum should be kept at around 20°C.
